To understand why Anderson hated the union so much we have to look into his past. On the the day, 28 June 1860, Anderson's mother was struck by lighting. This wasn’t the start of Anderson becoming a gorilla, but certainly a major event in his life. Despite the loss of Martha Jane Anderson, the Anderson's stayed strong and that year they had co-owned 320 acres of land. In 1862 Bloody Bill Anderson looked to get money another way by stealing horses and robbing people along the Santa Fe Trail. This was the start of Anderson's career as an outlaw. Bloody Bill Anderson’s father was killed in 1862 in a dispute with Judge Baker Arthur. What made it worse was the judge was a family friend and union supporter. They retaliated by killing the judge. From this point William T. Anderson, would be known as Bloody Bill Anderson. Soon after Bloody Bill started his rampage, his sister would be taken to a union jail. The jail would collapse killing multiply women. One of the women killed in the collapse, was Bloody Bill's sister. This added to Bloody Bill Anderson’s hatred against the union.
